Found in Travis County, Briar Cliff is a village that’s home to more than 1,800 people. Located just 30 miles west of Austin, the village provides the ideal place to live while allowing residents to easily commute to the city for work.
The village was originally developed as a resort area in the 1960s. It wasn’t long until people began to purchase lots and build homes close to the site. The result was an eclectic mix of permanent residences, summer homes, and country clubs alongside a few resorts.
Over time, the original developers filed for bankruptcy. Much of the area was purchased by entertainer Willie Nelson, who maintained free use of the golf course for local residents. After Nelson also lost ownership of the property for a time, concerns about the future of the community slowed growth. As Nelson was able to acquire additional properties in the area, more music venues, sporting businesses, and restaurants were established.
Today, water sports on the Travis Lake are common. There are a number of music venues to enjoy, and the residents are considered to be independent types who are happy to live and let live. People who prefer a relaxed pace for life will find Briar Cliff to be a great place to visit.
